When setting up a postcode restricted rate in the Better Shipping app, there are a couple ways to add your postcode areas.
Using the postcode restriction is optional. If you have the feature turned off when you set up your shipping rate, the shipping rate will appear for any customer within the selected Shopify shipping zone in your ShopifyAdmin->Settings->Shipping->GeneralProfile->ManageRates settings.
But if you need to have more control in which customers can see your shipping rates, the postcode feature is excellent.

You can create a list of postcodes in the include postcodes section of the shipping rate. Using the includes postcodes section means the shipping rate will only appear to customers who are inside the postcode area.
e.g. PA11AA, PA11AB, PA11AD, PA200AH
only customers within those postcodes will see the rate. All other customers will not see the rate.
You can also use the exclude postcodes section of the shipping rate. Adding postcodes in the exclude section means that only customers who are not within your postcodes will see the shipping rate (and those who are in the excluded area will not see it).
e.g., PA11AA, PA11AB, PA11AD, PA200AH
All customers who are not in PA1 1AA, PA1 1AB, PA1 1AD or PA20 0AH (and are within the Shopify shipping zone) will see the shipping rate. Customers in PA1 1AA, PA1 1AB, PA11 AD or PA20 0AH will not get the rate.
You can also use a mixture of the two. The app will always check the includes section first, and then check the excludes section second. For example, if you have:
includes: PA11AA, PA11AB, PA11AD
excludes: PA11AB
Then, customers in postcodes PA1 1AA and PA11 AB will see the rate. But customers in PA1 1AB will not because it's been excluded. Customers in any other postcodes will also not see the rate (as the include rule sets that limitation).
And you can also use the outward postcode match field for the postcodes. The outward postcode match field will match any postcodes that 'before the space'. For example, you can enter:
PA1, PA2, PA20
which will match any postcode that starts with those outward codes. Note you cannot enter "PA", that will not work, you must enter the full outward postcode before the space, e.g. PA1
Using the outward postcodes and the include/exclude sections of the restriction, you can fine tune your shipping rate to only appear/or not appear for specific areas. This allows you to charge more to other areas, or restrict your customers from checking out completely to other areas.
If you need to get a specific list, you can use a couple of websites to find an generate the postcodes lists in the correct format.
Generating custom UK Post code lists:
The quickest and easiest way to expand the UK post codes I've found is as follows:
1. Go to https://www.doogal.co.uk/UKPostcodes.php?Search=PH3
2. Search for the start of a the post code range you need (e.g. PH3),
3. In the top right, click 'Download' and click 'Active postcodes as CSV'.
4. Open up that file either in microsoft excel or in google sheets
5. In the post codes column, delete the top heading text cell "Postcode"
6. Select the whole post codes column and copy it to the clipboard (right click on the selected column and click 'copy' or press 'ctrl-c')
7. Then go to this website: https://convert.town/column-to-comma-separated-list
8. Paste in the column, and copy the output, and then you can put that straight back into the Better Shipping app.
