To edit your product rates, from the main Shipping Rates page of the app, find the shipping rate you want to edit, then click "edit product rates":
Once your product page has loaded, you will see a table with all of your products listed.
You can then proceed to enter in all of your product rates into the price column.
The important features on this page are as follows
The search box up the top allows you to quickly find specific products. Please note that the search only searches your product names, and does not search type, vendor, price or tiered groups. To use the search, simply type in a few letters of your products name and press the enter key.
Bulk Update Tool
The bulk update tool allows you to set the price, tiered group, skip shipping and enable/disable features of your products in bulk by selecting them by type, vendor or collection. There is another help page that walks you through using the bulk update tool in detail here.
Default Product Rate
The default product rate allows you to set a default rate for any new products that you add to your store. For example, if you have a t-shirt store, and you have already setup all of your shipping prices for your individual products. If you then want to add a new product to your store, such as a new t-shirt design, you would go to your ShopifyAdmin->Products page and create a new product. The new product is then imported into Better Shipping. But how does Better Shipping know what shipping rate to give to the new product? That is where the default shipping rate comes in. You can setup the default shipping rate, so that any newly added products are given a sensible rate until you come back into the Better Shipping app and modify the new product to have it's own individual rate.
Products can be taken off the default product rate at any time and be assigned their own individual per product prices. You can even put products onto the default product rate by using the "Use Default Product Rate" switch on the "Product Rates" page of each of your shipping rates, which makes an easy way to manage your products if they all have the same rate.
When setting the default product rate you have all the same options as a normal product rate, such as tiered shipping, which can be used for the default rate. Note, new products you create in your ShopifyAdmin->Products page will be automatically imported and put on the default rate.
You can input the prices and option into the "Default" rate as you would for any other product. Once you have set your prices, make sure to press the "Update and Save" button to save your changes. And that's it! Your default product rate is set and you can use the "Use Default Product Rate" column in the per product rate to add/remove products from using the set default product rate and any new products that you add to your store will automatically use the default product rate.
Note that each of your Shipping Rates has it's own default product rate, so they are all individually managed. This means you can have different default rates for different shipping zones.
Also, when creating a new shipping rate, the default product rate is always set to $0.00 (free) shipping for new products. However, as described above, that can be changed at any time by setting it to something that suits your store's shipping strategy.
Product Page Navigation
If you have more than 20 products, you will see the product page navigation buttons.
You can use these to click through each page and view all of your products. Please note, that if you make any changes to your products, you must click "Update and Save" before going to the next page, or your changes will not be saved.
This is where you will set your per product price for each product. The price entered here will be calculated as (item_quantity * price). For example if you set $5 in the price field and a customer orders 2 products, the calculation will be 2x$5 = $10 shipping. This is done for each product.
If you have selected to enable tiered shipping, you will also see a button. Using this button you can add your tiers to discount the shipping. For example, if you wanted a product to ship for $5 for the first product and $1 for 2 or more products, you can hit the button to add a tier, then in the top box put $5 and in the 2 or more price box put $1. Then if a customer orders 3 products, the calculation will be $5 + $1 + $1 = $7 total shipping.
Better Shipping allows you to set a price for each variant of a product. You can use access this by clicking on the Variants button underneath the name of the product
For more details about the per variant shipping and all the features on that pop up, please see our per variant shipping page for information and an example.
This column will only be visible if you have enabled tiered shipping. The tiered shipping group allow you to choose the scope of where your tiered shipping applies. A much more detailed explanation of the "Tiered Groups" feature is on the Creating Tiered Group Rates help page.
For example, if you have 2 products, a t-shirt and a key chain. The t-shirt product also has 3 variants, small, medium and large.
You have setup the t-shirt to ship $10 for the first product, $5 for 2 or more and $1 for 3 or more, using the tiered shipping price fields as described above.
The key chain ships for $2 per product.
The tiered shipping group also has 3 options, "product", "variant", or "group 1" (note you can change the group 1 name later).
For the first example, if we select "product" in the tiered shipping group dropdown for only our t-shirt product. If a customer then puts in an order for 5 t-shirts, 3 large, 1 medium and 1 small the total shipping cost is calculated by:
$10 + $5 + $1 + $1 + $1 = $18 total shipping.
Notice the tiered shipping is applied across all the variants in the product (small, medium and large), and the customer can order any amount of each variant and it counts toward the tiered shipping count in the product.
Now if using the same price settings for the t-shirt product, we change the tiered group to "variant", and the customer makes the same order, the calculation will be:
(large) $10 + $5 + $1 + (medium) $10 + (small) $10 = $36 total shipping.
Here you can see that the tiered shipping we set 'restarts' for every variant. So the tiered product count only goes up for multiples of the same variant, and each variant is treated separately as its own tiered shipping calculation.
The final way to use the tiered shipping group is to choose a group from the dropdown. In our case, "Group 1".
We are also going to choose "Group 1" for our key chain product "Big Dog Keychain".
You will notice now that the price has disappeared with a message saying the tiered group prices are set on the next page. If we click "Update and Save", then down the bottom of the page click "Next", we are taken to the tiered group shipping page. Note you will only be taken to this page if you are using the tiered groups.
On this page, we can set the same tiered shipping prices for our "Group 1" tiered group: $10 for the first item, $5 for 2 or more, and $1 for 3 or more items.
Now, if the customer orders 5 t-shirts, 3 large, 1 medium and 1 small as well as 2 key chains, the calculation will be:
$10 + $5 + $1 + $1 + $1 + $1 + $1 = $20 total shipping.
Here both the t-shirt and the key chain items counted toward tiered shipping count.
This is a fantastic feature of our app, however it does require you to have a play around with it and make some test orders in your store to see if you are getting what you expect with the tiered group feature. A much more detailed explanation of the "Tiered Groups" feature is on the Creating Tiered Group Rates help page.
Skip Shipping Rules
This toggle switch allows you to have certain products be excluded from any shipping rules you set (shipping rules are created in the next step).
This can be useful if you have a shipping rule for "Free for orders over $100", but you also have a very large item that you don't want to be included in the promotion. If you set the large item to "Skip", then it won't be included in the "Free over $100" rule and its normal per product shipping will be applied.
This feature is also used for your free+shipping type promotions. Any of your free+shipping items can be set to skip your shipping rules so that the shipping will always be charged.
By default, the skip shipping rules will setting will exclude the product's price and weight from any shipping rules. So if you have a "Free over $100" rule, and your skip shipping rules product retails for more than $100, the retail price for the skip shipping rules product will not count towards the $100 price of the "Free over $100" rule. And the same applies the the weight. Any weight from your skip shipping rules product will not be included in any weight based shipping rules. If you do need the price or weight to be included in the shipping rule calculation, please contact us as we do have a feature to allow you achieve that if you need to.
Use Default Product Rate
The per product use default product rate switch sets the specific product to either use or not use the default product rate. Please see the Default Product Rate section for more information on how to set the default product rate.
Update and Save Button
The "Update and Save" button will appear in the top right hand corner of the page every time you make a change to your products. You must press "Update and Save" to save you changes to the current products on the page. If you leave the current page, without saving your changes, you will get a warning pop-up. If you continue in the warning pop-up, your changes will not be saved. You can make as many changes as you like to the current page before pressing the "Update and Save" button.
There is also a second "Update and Save Products" button at the very bottom of the product rates page. This button will do exactly the same thing as the "Update and Save" button that appears in the top left. It is a second button with the same function for convenience. Both the buttons will save your products.
Once you have entered in all of your product rates, and made sure to click the "Update and Save" button, you will be ready to continue to the next step in creating your shipping rate. To do that, scroll all the way to the bottom of the product rates page, and click on the "Next" button. This will take you to the next step in creating your shipping rate.
Creating and Updating Products from Shopify
Finally, after you have completed setting up your shipping rate, if you decide to add, remove or edit products in your ShopifyAdmin->Products page, the changes will be reflected in the product rates page as well.
Deleting a product from your Shopify Admin will delete the product rate from this shipping rate. Please be aware that it can take up to 2 hours (though it is usually ~10 minutes) for Shopify to notify us of your deletion, however, as the customers will no longer be able to order the product, this will not cause an issue with your shipping rate
Editing a product (such as changing the name of your product) can also take up to 2 hours (though it is usually ~10 minutes) for Shopify to notify us of your change. However, Better Shipping will keep generating a shipping price uninterrupted for the changed product, even if the updates are not shown in the app yet, so that will cause no issues to your customers.
Creating a new product in your Shopify Admin Products section can also take up to 2 hours (though it is usually instant) for Shopify to notify us of your new product creation. All new products that you create will appear in all of your shipping rates on the default product rate (see image below). This means that the product will use the default product rate for that shipping rate. You can then go in and edit that product if you need to.
As always if you are unclear on how a feature might work for your store, or would like to ask any questions please email us at email@example.com. We are always happy to hear from you.
